Tom Dixon Fluoro Shade pendant light

Fluro

We featured the floor versions of these on Retro To Go recently, but we also love the Tom Dixon Fluoro Shade pendant light too.

Like the floor lamp, the Fluoro Shade pendant light is a blow moulded polycarbonate lamp that's coated in fluorescent orange with a matt finish. The end result? A piece of design that's both functional and eye-catching, even when it's turned off.

Currently on sale at Nest, you can pick one up for £174.25.

Paterson1

A very modern house that takes a little nod to the past - Paterson House on the East Lothian Coast, Scotland.

Designed in 2005 by Paterson Architects, it was conceived as a contemporary interpretation of traditional rural dwellings, built to take advantage of the views towards the sea on the East Lothian Coast. The house is a timber frame structure, clad in Western red cedar, sitting atop a concrete base cut into the site and offering three bedrooms, two bathrooms, an open plan living/dining/kitchen area, study, utility room and rooflights to take advanrtage of both the sun and those views.

Studio Culture by Tony Brook & Adrian Shaughnessy

Studio

Studio Culture is subtitled 'The Secret Life of the Graphic Design Studio', and gives an insider's perspective on life at some of the top international design studios. Brook and Shaughnessy have worked in the industry for many years and have both founded successful studios themselves.

Establishing your own studio is something that many graphic designers consider at some stage in their career, but establishing and developing a successful studio is no mean feat. This book uncovers how others have achieved this goal through indepth interviews with the studio founders, and serves as a guide to creating, maintaining and growing a studio culture.

Available for £24.00 you can buy it online at Magma Books.

Volume vinyl and record deck storage unit by Test Collective

Volume

A piece of furniture that's very much designed for purpose - the Volume storage unit by Test Collective.

The purpose is simple - to store your records and hold the equipment for playing them all. That means room for a deck, mixer, vinyl-friendly shelving, display areas for your vinyl and some extra space for your bits and pieces, all made from bamboo and corian.

If we were being pedantic, we would ask where the speakers go, not to mention the second deck. Aside from that, it's perfect for lovers of long-players and available to buy direct for an as-yet undisclosed price.

Nova Calisto pendant light by Anu Moser

Nova

Yes, it does look like an old sea mine or perhaps something out of an old sci-fi movie - but there's no denying that the Nova Calisto pendant light is an eye-catching piece of interior design.

The work of Anu Moser and part of a range of three similar Nova shades, the Calisto is a mouthblown shade made from three layers of glass, with pieces added manually after the shade has been blown to give it that distinctive look.

If you think that sounds like a pain to change to the bulb, don't worry, a patented hanging system makes it both easy to suspend and indeed, to access that bulb. Not cheap at £478, but you're buying a piece of art as much as a piece of functional design.

Dream Mirror from Gallotti & Radice

Dream mirror

Mirrors were never something to get that excited about in my book - something to check your hair in, but not much more, until that is I saw the gorgeous Dream mirror from Gallotti & Radice.  The mirror includes 40 triangular mirrors at varied angles which reflect the light beautifully.

The size of the mirror means it would defnitely be the focal point of a room, and is available in two sizes, 120cm and 150cm. Unfortunately before I go any further I should point out that the starting price is £2637 so you may not be able to buy any other furniture, but at least your wall would look lovely. Find out more at Mac & Mac Interiors.

Hockney_iphone

Fancy owning some original David Hockney artwork? Even better, fancy owning it without paying a penny? You can if you visit the BBC website in the next two days, where three examples of the iconic artist's iPhone art are available for download.

Yes, he's 70 years old and he's got an iPhone. Not only that, Hockney is using it to create images like the one pictured above, which is one of the three being made available for download. Ok, they're not A Bigger Splash, but they are only available for 48 hours, so in effect, they're limited editions.

The images are online to coincide with the superb David Hockney - A Bigger Picture documentary, which covers Hockney at work on his return to his native Bridlington in Yorkshire. If you missed it, you can watch it again via the BBC website.

Ribbon Coat Rack from Headsprung

Ribbon

The tagline on the Headsprung website for the Ribbon Coat Rack is 'function meets art' and we think they have a point. This wall mounted coat rack looks so sculptural it almost doesn't need to have a purpose, yet it can hold up to five coats and scarves.

The design was inspired by a ribbon blowing in the wind, and each rack is hand-made so no two are identical. Available in a choice of six colours, the rack costs £55 and can be bought from the Headsprung website.

Action Organizing Clips from Mateo Ilasco

Actionclips

For those that work from home, staying organised is not always easy...or maybe that's just me?  Anyway Action Organizing Clips from Mateo Ilasco look like they could help big time. They could also be a great present to get someone if dropping hints about being tidier haven't had any effect.

These are no horrid plastic organizing clips either! These are letterpressed on thick cotton stock clips with a metal clip on reverse and packaged in a reusable jar.

Mateo Ilasco has a range of lovely stationery products including calendars and notepads, see her range and these clips which are priced at $13.00 at Mateo Ilasco.

Normann Copenhagen Camping Series of outdoor furniture

Norman1

Designed by Jesper K. Thomsen for Normann Copenhagen, the Camping Series is a high-end design series of what tends to be disposable and foldaway.

Which means chairs, a table, a stool and a daybed in moulded beech wood (with a natural finish), full grain leather seating and high quality workmanship, as everything in the range is handmade.

The chair is above, while the daybed is over the page. Prices, as you can imagine, are high - starting at £1,090 per piece.

How? Well, the seat is based on a classic tractor seat, chosen for its 'ergonomic shape' and made of a colour gel coated polyester resin, while the legs are based on a three-legged milking stool, produced from oiled European oak.

Two sizes and three colours - prices start at £270.

Sony Vaio Signature Collection notebooks - with fake crocodile skin finish

Sony_sig

Classy or cheesy? We'll let you make your own mind up on the Sony Vaio Signature Collection notebooks.

The series itself isn't completely tacky, there are some pretty smart high gloss finishes for matching up your computer with your home office, but we're drawn towards the CS390, which goes for that fake crocodile skin finish with metallic trim that looks (to us) like a cheap handbag off the market - although if Sony sent us one, I'm sure we could offer a more reasoned view.

Only the US for these right now, with prices starting at $749.99 (around £450), which seems pretty reasonable for a decent notebook, especially if you love fake croc.

N16 Design coffee table

N16_table

N16 Design describes its products as 'well-built modern furniture at prices within reach of most'. Which just about sums up the N16 Design coffee table.

At first glance, you might think it looks slightly retro, but on second glance, we think it looks more futuristic, an ABS plastic frame with polyurethane foam fill, with a choice of toughened glass or off white lacquer for the surface.

A variety of colours available, with the table yours for £295.

Aston Martin to launch Cygnet budget city car

Cygnet

An Aston Martin on your drive for the price of an average runaround? That's what you'll get with the Aston Martin Cygnet, which is due to launch in 2010.

It's not strictly a 'new' car, rather it is based on the recent Toyota iQ, with a similar shape, a 1.0 or 1.33-litre engine (same as the iQ) and low emissions, which will also mean less road tax. The big difference? Well, of course, it will carry an Aston Martin badge, as well as what's described as a 'luxurious' interior, the kind of thing you might expect on the Bond-friendly big brother.

Aston Martin will make between 1,000 - 2,000 Cygnets a year, selling for around the £20,000 mark.
