Apple introduces the iPhone 5

Of course, you probably know about this. But just in case you happen to have been living under a rock, Apple has just launched its latest smartphone, going by the name of the iPhone 5.

Described as the the thinnest and lightest iPhone so far, it packs all that technology into an all-new 7.6 mm anodised aluminium body, 18 per cent thinner and 20 per cent lighter than its predecessor.

Packed inside is the new four-inch Retina display and a taller screen, optimised for widescreen HD video, not to mention better web browsing and easier five-day calendar use. You also get a new A6 chip for twice the performance plus an eight-megapixel iSight camera that is again smaller, but with enhanced performance, thanks to a sapphire crystal lens cover. That camera also offers up a new panorama mode and for video, improved stabilisation, video face detection for up to 10 faces and the option to take still photos as you record your movies.

4G connectivity is here if you want it, as is enhanced Wi-Fi, a new Lightning connector, improved audio and all-new Apple EarPods. There's also the small matter of a new operating system, aka iOS 6.

All of that is available to order in the UK from tomorrow (13th September), with deliveries expected from the 19th September. Networks should be getting theirs too on that date, if you want to hassle for an upgrade.
